Bachelor’s in Applied Science – Glenville State College

The Bachelor’s in Applied Science program provides students with a strong combined background in natural resource management and organismal biology. Ecological principles and applied science are employed to manage renewable resources. The Program accommodates students interested in biology, wildlife, and graduate or professional school in the sciences.

A Bachelor’s in Applied Science graduate will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of the natural components of air, water, and soil and man’s impact upon their quality.

  •  They’ll develop an understanding of land-based renewable resources including forests, rangeland, farmland, outdoor recreation, and wildlife.

  • Develop an understanding of on-site versus off-site environmental impacts and the use of risk assessment as an indicator of environmental impacts.

  • Evaluate economic, political and social concepts impacting sustainable development and use of natural resources.

  • Evaluate the impact of the removal of mineral and energy resources.

  • Learn technical approaches including principles of map reading and surveying, computer applications, and be able to review and interpret spatial data.

  • Identify major forest trees, shrubs, and woody lianas of the United States.

  • Identify and describe basic physiologic processes including photosynthesis, respiration, osmo regulation, mineral nutrition, water transport, translocation of food and other metabolic substances, growth regulation, and reproduction.

  • Describe the morphology, taxonomy, ecology, and evolutionary relationships of the major animal phyla.

  • Demonstrate the ability to organize a research project and defend the results, methods, and materials of the project.

  • Demonstrate laboratory and technical skills including microbiological techniques, taxonomy, dissection, field collection, and the ability to analyze scientific literature.

  • Provide written and oral evidence of competence in biology.

This degree program is intended for students who have completed an associate of applied science degree at a regionally accredited two-year institution prior to attending Glenville State College. An overall 2.0 GPA is required on all courses previously completed.
