Overview

Founded in 1871, Shepherd University is a fully accredited, public liberal arts university located within 90 minutes from Washington, D.C. and three international airports. Named the only West Virginia public school on the College of Distinction list, Shepherd provides students an excellent education with smaller class sizes and the opportunity for a more personalized education. Campus and local community life are safe and vibrant, and the region is historically and culturally rich with year-round recreation and sport. Shepherd has an Intensive English Language Program for nonnative English speakers and offers more than 90 undergraduate and graduate programs. Most programs include internship opportunities. Scholarships and graduate assistantships are available to international students.

International Financial Aid

Merit-based academic scholarships and waivers for undergraduate international students are available through Admissions, with additional opportunities through the Honors Program. Athletic scholarships are also available through the Athletic Department.  Variable tuition waivers and assistantships are available to international graduate students.

International Admissions Requirements

  • Suitable academic credentials and English language proficiency equivalent to 79 TOEFL (internet based) or 6.5 IELTS.  Lesser proficiency will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis with possible admission to the Intensive English Language Program.

English Language Program

Shepherd University offers an Intensive English Language Program (IELP) course of study to qualifying students who need advanced English Language skills. Students must meet complete the university-based oral and written English proficiency examination.

Housing and Meals

Shepherd has a variety of on-campus housing, to include 12-month units, and meal plan options that are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. International students are fully integrated into the campus community and student life.
